The restoration of a historic stretch of ironwork in Derby's Duffield Road is a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes into preserving our cultural heritage. This project, which cost just over £230,000 and took nine months to complete, involved a team of experts working tirelessly to restore the Grade II listed cast iron Victorian bollards, chains, and rails.
What makes this restoration particularly fascinating is the decision to preserve the imperfections of the original ironwork. As Whitehouse Construction's managing director Richard Jamieson points out, the bollards are not equally spaced, and the chains have unequal drops due to their unique manufacturing process. This attention to detail adds character and authenticity to the restored ironwork, rather than creating a uniform and sterile appearance.
The project required a high level of precision and collaboration between engineers, conservationists, and specialists in metalwork restoration. Calibre Metalwork, a specialist firm in Stockport, was responsible for removing and restoring the ironwork using traditional methods. They blast-cleaned every component to bare metal, repaired cracks and corrosion, and applied a fresh coat of green paint.
Whitehouse Construction, the engineering firm behind the project, also played a crucial role in ensuring the restoration met the highest standards. They installed new base plates into the pavement and replaced or repaired damaged sections of the sandstone retaining wall. The team carried out a thorough survey of the ironwork, numbering, photographing, and documenting each component in meticulous detail to ensure the final result matched the original.
The restoration of the ironwork is a reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage. As Jamieson notes, 'There’s a real feel-good factor knowing that these bollards will be there for another 100 years and we’ve added another chapter to their story.'
